And they make a good point in it too it would cost a great deal of programming to make it possible, but thats their problem not mine i still wont buy gw2. Hasty theres nothing hasty about it they might have changed it in a year and if they did il buy it like i did with the other chapters. Simplistic true but often the simple solutions are the best ones no need to be complicated about it. And if you feel a strong urge to laugh about that it shows off how hollow your head is.

How hollow my head is? Ouch. I called it an uninformed decision because we know next to nothing about GW2 and very little is set in stone, hasty because it's 2 years away from release, and simplistic because it's based solely on being able to import characters. Although, if importing characters into a completely new game is that important to you, then I suppose everything else about the game is irrelevant. I just don't understand that line of reasoning. I mean, I understand getting attached to your characters, sure, but I don't understand the jump to "no transfer = no GW2 for me" instead of, say, "well I'm not sold on GW2 yet, but we'll see how it turns out in 2 years". To me, that is a huge leap that isn't worth making.

I hardly consider myself an optimist...but sometimes I surprise myself. Unlike everyone else I look forward to both EN and 2 as is! Here are my opinions on two of the big issues people seem to have with GW2.
1. Level Cap - As was made clear: this has no effect on PvP. The only concern people should have is in PvE. ANet has always discouraged grinding in GW. You will very likely level up through content, not killing regenerating spawn.
Here's a possibility: Your experience might come primarily through missions and quests. Say you get to a certain mission in GW2. If you did all of the quests before that, you're level, say, 27. If not, you're level 25 (missed quest rewards, etc.). There's no way to significantly be beyond 27, because there are no other sources of experience until after the mission. So, as long as you've merely MADE it to that mission, you are within the range of levels people will accept. (A level 40 will not be looking to do the mission, because they would have already done it.) In this sense, there is balance.
By the time you "complete" GW2, you should be the max level NATURALLY (like with the current GW games.) There will be no endgame discrimination because of this level cap.
A higher level cap can be positive. They could merely show how much content you've completed. With 100 levels, this could mean a lot of content! (That's my inner optimist speaking.) This way, discrimination doesn't happen, while there's still a seniority/notoriety factor. Of course, it's not my job to think of these sorts of ideas, and I'm sure they'll think of even better ideas than my above thought if they need to!
What I said is in the right direction though.
2. Character/Item Transfer - Like you, I have put a lot of time into my characters. At first, I was disheartened by the fact there would be no character transfers. But then I pondered exactly what about it bothered me. It all came down to mere time invested. I speak as though time is worthless, but hear me out:
What will a character transfer accomplish? What about your characters do you want transferred so badly? Regardless of the amount of time you put into your character, there are no real tangible benefits whatsoever other than the fact you can have an instant level 20 with max armor and max weapons. A level 21 in GW2, with higher level armor and equipment available, will already out-stat you, and will probably take only a week to attain.
What you like about your character is not even possibly transferable: memories.
After much thought, the Hall of Monuments is much better than character or item transfer. Don't hold me to this, but I have a feeling a lot of us will be pleasantly surprised.
To make it clear: Character transfers would be a worthless feature.
ADD: And notice we aren't even close to the "end times" of GW1. GW1 has been around for about 1 yr and 11 months. GW2 beta isn't supposed to start until late 2008 (so October...November) which is 1 yr and 7-8 months away. We're only a bit over halfway. If the game will be released in early 2009, we're actually slightly under halfway.
So live it up.

What I don't understand is why people are more willing to jump ship to another franchise over GW2 soley because of the lack of character transfer. Its not like Aion or WoW will allow me to port Volta over. I mean, you're starting fresh no mater how you look at it. If anything GW2 would be a less jarring transition, methinks.

But what i do see is that "bringing gold from GW1 to GW2" will cause an unfair advantage over new players, or players that did not farm. And this goes without saying that this is also going to f*ck up the economy from the start...
|
Yup and once the GW2 economy is destroyed everyone will cry about how its all Anet's fault that they allowed the transfer of gold. I dont know why most people have got so worked up over the whole transferability thing. Guild Wars was never going to last forever and all good things come to an end.

Why? Well, what's the point of playing an RPG. To have fun and to develop your character. When I played D&D, I would retire my characters at a certain point. At a certain level, they weren't as fun to play as say a "mid-level" character. I already had all the weapons I wanted or needed. I had all the spells I needed. I was done playing that character.
If your bring in all your Gold and items from Guild Wars, what is there to do in Guild Wars 2?
New armor? Well, no need to actually play the game, I'll just walk over and buy it. New weapons? Well, I can just buy it at the started area from someone who already has it.
In short, carrying over items and gold to Guild Wars 2 will make it LESS FUN to play.
My advice to those with millions of Gold: Give it away. Give it to newbies who've never had 15k to buy one part of 15k armor. Make your mark on Guild Wars by being the most generous person you can be.
When GW: EN comes out, I plan on giving away everything once I've finished my Hall of Monuments. I hope others will consider doing the same!
|
Im going to spend it all. If GW2 does not allow the transfer of gold it wont matter I spent it. If GW2 does allow the transfer of gold I will simply play another game. Either way I win.

Because those people hate Arenanet for not letting them port over their precious character (that is, ecto, gold and FoW-armor), and won't support Arenanet anymore? All the whining about 'invested' time going to waste because people can't port their character...I sure hope this whining isn't going on for the next 2 years until GW2:Beta.
The Halls of Monuments is a great idea to connect the worlds of GW1 and GW2, but thats just my opinion.

I was more (extremely) surprised that character transfers wouldn't continue through the life of GW. There was no suggestion of it in the past, the 6 monthly campaigns where you can take your character across certainly didn't suggest it. To me one idea behind "MMO's" is of a (persistent) world that just gets expanded on over time, that you explore with your characters, rather than of a world which gets reset along with your characters when the sequel is released.
I think once people get used to it, it should be okay. Personally with the way GW1 is leading onto GW2 I think GW is really more like a single player offline RPG played online rather than a CORPG or MMORPG. It's a bit like the later Wizardry games.
Now that character continuity aren't a given I guess people might focus on the things that will transfer across sequels, or at least make that mental adjustment for periodic character resets.

Dear Anet
First of I have read the article, read about future plans and such, and there were things I liked and disliked but I am not gonna preach on what I like and do not like, just on what you shouldn't forget.
Guildwars for me is the first MMO I've played longer then 3 months better put you guys got me hooked for allmost two years now. So I thrust that you know how to make and build a game.
I've played I think many off the bigger MMO's out there WoW, Lineage2, SWG, ENB,... to name a couple. But what did those games lack and what keeps me fascinated in this one, wel when I first started playing I entered pre seering and got a movie, thought by myself ah nothing special allmost all of the MMo's have that to get you based in their world. But after I finished preseering I noticed that the quest were linked towards a bigger story. Then when I left I got a new movie ... I went huh?!? Then it became clear that this had concepts of an offline game storytelling but in MMO style and I became in love. But that was for a short time because I quickly discovered PvP. I noticed the arena in Ascalon and then in Lions Arch and soon I wouldn't move on in the game and just play against people all day. Then guildies of mine felt obliged to pull me a bit more through the game had fun enjoyed the story and so on. But until this day I haven't finished any of the three expantions and well... Honestly I don't even mind. I unlocked my entire account through faction so PvP and I enjoyed every last minute of it, that's great that one could go at it in two ways pvp or pve for unlocking. Now the point that I am making is that I enjoyed the pve aspect but I loved how the pvp worked.
For all the games I did there is no other game out there that has such a well balanced pvp system. I am damn sure that I am not the only one in this matter just look at the ladders, just look at HA when it was still 8vs8 al lot of people play pvp.
I understand that their are people in the game which just love the pve and I am pretty sure that the content for those people are limited. Well I think most of the people complaining about the game are people who do nothing but pve.
But I still find that this game as even the name states Guild Wars it litterly is a PvP game. I understand that you wanna make everyone happy Pve and PvP people and I trully hope that you can do that. But keep in mind that most of the people that still stick with GW are in hearth PvP people. I've seen many people leave over time even now a lot are still leaving often I wondered why but when I asked one question I knew. Do you PvP? answer no why?
Pve in this game is limited I know that. Some just keep doing the same over and over again. In a way PvP is doing the same over and over again... but it is not. Builds diver people diver a top guild could not have it's day and you can slip a victory in, a tactic is missed and a match is lost. Every time you enter in pvp every game you play is diffrent from the next one, even if both teams you've played so far have the same build.
So what I am really pleading for is make GW2 have a ball I thrust you guys to make something awesome who knows you might even convince me to do a little more Pve. But keep in mind the most people that whine are people that got blinded by one side of the game and might just not have tried it's true nature. Please the way pvp is now for me it's perfect and doesn't need an upgrade... and this I mean. It's like a card game which has been around for ages some of you might know it Magic the Gathering. It works on a very basic way you have a deck you make with all sorts of combo's in it and try to beat your oponent. When I was younger I played it and often wondered what fun it would be to actually have my deck come to life, guess what for me GW is that embodyment. GW is the same in pvp 8 skills 8 people 64 skills in total and it's not allways the skills but people that make the diffrence.
With all the talk about lvl caps and such I agree with the main thing a lvl 100 should not be able to pound a lvl30 into the ground. It shouldn't become a game I invested more time then you in my char. But I wouldn't mind that the evolution cap is for example lvl 30 or 20 but after that evolution cap lvl becomes a sort of a title. Look I am lvl 1200 (but his true cap att wise is 20)
Either way I think I never said it before Anet thx for Guild Wars, for making it a great competitive game! I am sure you'll make something great if you don't tamper with the things that are allready great in this game.
Greetz
Furu
Ps: I am very happy 8vs8 is back again you might have listened to the community about changing it to 6vs6 but the problem is listen to the bigger comunity those that are happy don't complain.
And after seeing this post on the site I edited one more thing and that is this jeeeeeez am I longwinded ^^

I wonder if they will make sure that the quest system is the way in which is the main way of getting exp than grinding making sure thats not how people should go about it. And i hope that the only things being instanced will be towns.
Also about Tyria i hope you can explore everypart of the map, not just some specific places. I want the whole map to be explored!
Also hopefully theres balance making the game longitivity high so that theres always stuff to do, reach new goals, complete in special events and so on. And that some things you do will be unique just for that character and will change for everyone.
All im really looking for is longitivty and big ass raids....woo

I also have some Questions:
Will you ever be able to just walk up to like a charr character and kill him like on WoW PvP Servers, or will there be some diference in how people are killed.
Also how will pvp work between the different races? Will they all be against each other?

I don't think they'll have the whole "PvP anywhere" thing that other games have. The only PvP that they've mentioned has been the world PvP, which is only in specific areas (I think), and the standard PvP that is balanced (basically the same system as in GW1). So no, I don't think you will be able to just walk around killing people.

My overall opinion so far.
You could say that its frustration or something but still i would like to state some facts.
1:Character transfer
So far we all heard the thing about a no transfer, which is indeed sometimes hard to do,but not imposible.
Anet maybe is considering that a no transfer would be more fair for the new players.
That is practicaly incorect, you cant hope for a better profit by making all the old
players unable to transfer that part of the ego that makes them still play the game.
As i stated earlier i dont care about items-lvl-titles.
The name reserve is something us THE veterans of the game would like.
Its not the lvl 20-50-400 that counts, its that little meathead who took tons of punishment to cover his party members.
Name is something we the old ones recognise (small example the mctiger sisters over grotto).
Since thing havent started yet,we can only sit back and wait on this one.
2:the infamus lvl cap
Now this is a shady section.
You see,the whole thing with lvls etc blah blah,i dont mind the lvl cap and also i dont mind see it raised for gw 2.
There is something that trully ticks me off,and thats something some other games suffer greatly from it.
Thats BOTS,yes you heard correct, the usual annoying bots.
Ooook so far so good,if there was something i liked in gw,was the entire absence of bots till recently.
And heck i still dont mind them much because gw still has the lvl 20 cap,and they are usually on inter districts.
One of the early games i played was lineage, and for sometime it was good, but nowadays despite the crap ncsoft says, theyr servers analogy is 1 bot/3players,so i dont want to see that in gw2.
What the heck we should say about bots when we are gonna have a lvl 100-200-300 cap?
Thats something i dont intend to find out simply because if by release of gw 2,gw 1 is still bot infested ,it would make me expect them in gw 2 as well.
And for gods sake someone go do a clean out on the bot infested areas, yohlon haven-arborstone and various other.
Ohhhh its hard to detect bots (the usual gm responce on various games).
Well DOH!!what you call the train of Mo/Me-Mo/Wr going towards the exit take a turn, touch THE sign saying about the exit, and then head out?
3rd and last section:GW after gw2 release
Now this is something grey as well.
Gray mentioned playing d1 d2 etc.
Some of us around here,we go back ages as gamers.
Particulary what does remain in our memories about blizzard is this, blizzard whenever makes something new, totaly ditches her old games.
d1 i didnt play that much, but heck in d2 i did waste 2 years of my life and enjoyed it.
Now during the production of warcraft 3,the one thing that made me ditch d2 and blizzard entirely was the long waiting for a new patch.
The wait was 1 and a freakin half year.
So far from experience,i can admit that Anet does listen to customers, but still this fear remains.
I certainly dont want to see the same thing happening in gw,waiting another 1-2 years for seeing something new in the game i loved.
And the eyes over north expansion, well frig,i am gonna buy it thats for sure.
But still it makes me feel like i am fed leftovers from the gw 2 table.
I know Anet isnt blizzard, but this somehow feels like going in the same direction.
This is my personal opinion and i am just typing it down here for my own silly reasons.
Lets hope the whole thing, will simply not follow the same destiny as the rest.

actually grave, if you check, a lot of the game designers ARE former blizzard people. No less, they're the ones that gave us starcraft and Diablo.
heck, they based GW off of the diablo busisness model.
I would think of ALL people, they would understand the crappy crap crap busisness practices that blizzard has done.
Yes, they gave us starcraft. Yes, they gave us broodwars.
Then we got WC3... okaaay. that was nice. But a lot of us were, and still are waiting for SC2 to this day. They had Ghost in the works.
Then they started working on WoW. That got delayed.
I got into Lineage2 while waiting for WoW to come out.
Then WoW came out.
And started eating the market.
Ghost got canceled, and tons of people got laid off, and SC2 became the dream that would never come.
And these guys were right in the middle of it, and they KNOW the types of things blizzard does, and I think of all things, they do NOT want to become another blizzard.
And NCsoft has been smart, and simply collected money from it, and marketed it to other regions, and has left the game designers and operators alone.
If this were any other game, I'd be fearfull.
But tell me this. Would ANY other game have changed the Razah quest AND...offered those who did it thier gems back?
From now on, anyone has a problem with Anet doing things, or potentially doing things, I will hold up my hand, and say, 'talk to the razah'.
Although... it would be nice if we could get a bot cleanup on yohlan.

Brightington, you forgot to mention how much bitching and moaning was involved to get that Razah quest fixed.
In fact, most of the good changes A-net has made were the result of players getting frustrated.

Don’t you guys read game magazines? Anyway here is some info form James Phinney, one of GW 2’s lead designers (according to PC Gameplay).
PvP:
There will be PvP Arena and Guild vs Guild matches, just like in GW1. They are especially interesting for the hardcore PvP players. New are the World vs World maps where hundred’s op players can battle each other like in an RTS game. (so there is no indication that you can pk each other in a normal adventure map).
Quests:
You will meet hundreds of players on the normal PvE maps. There you can participate in ‘events’ which happen while playing. James Phinney gave this example:
Suddenly you find a village that is about to be destroyed by a dragon. Players can start helping the villagers to kill the dragon, either to team up or individually. If they manage to kill the dragon they will be rewarded according to the way they participated, individually. But maybe the dragon escapes, destroying the village bridge in anger. Villagers bring materials to repair the bridge, attracting thieves to steal those materials. Players can than team up to prevent the stealing…
Missions:
Just like in GW1 there will be instanced missions to continue the story. Parties in those missions will be smaller than in GW1
Heroes and henchmen:
There will be no heroes and henchies in GW2. But every player has 1 companion who does not take a slot. Slots are for partying up with other players only.
Armor:
You can wear every armor in game, but of course a magic user wearing heavy armor may find some disadvantages
Others things:
Higher level weapons with more variation than in GW1, more sophisticated salvage system, no decision yet about auction houses, but definitively more and improved ways to trade.

Sounds like they're really changing things up.
I'm really curious to see how the new armor rules will work (will Hammer/ Air Elementalists actually be viable?)
Hmm, no Henchies at all!?! I hadn't heard that before. Not sure I like that...
